Case Studies & Awards

Mushroom Packaging has won the highest awards and is in use right now around the world by a number of Fortune 500s and other customers committed to more sustainable packaging.

  • Dell Server Multi Pack

Dell has been leading the electronics industry in sustainability and is now recognized in the marketplace for environmentally responsible packaging. Ecovative designed Mushroom® Packaging components to replace fabricated EPE- polyethylene foam parts that provide cushioning and bracing in large packages for Dell servers. These packages tip the scales at over 200 lbs, and these sensitive servers require the utmost protection. Ecovative's packaging design team worked with Dell's packaging engineers to create geometries that would protect the hard drives from experiencing damaging G loads in the event of a drop.

  • Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel started on the path to eliminate foam in 2001, when they discontinued the use of petroleum-based packing peanuts to protect customer purchases. Since then, they have been working hard to phase out all plastic foam packaging. In accordance with their goal, Crate & Barrel sought a fully compostable packaging solution to protect their American-made steel bookcases. Since beginning their use of Mushroom Packaging corner blocks, Crate & Barrel has reported no damages. Customers can reuse the standard corner blocks, or compost them at home.

  • PUMA

Sport lifestyle company PUMA is using Mushroom® Packaging to protect their limited edition PUMA Laird stand-up paddleboard (SUP). Once the boards arrive safely at their destination, the packaging can be broken up and used as mulch, composted at home, or it can even be used as a biodegradable beach toy. Ecovative packaging designers created the entire packaging solution from scratch. This design included multiple custom parts that fit into a complex 14 foot long corrugated carton. Due to the uniqueness of this project, Ecovative sent an engineer to assist with the initial pack-up of these products to help develop best practices and ensure damage-free shipments.

  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory will use Ecovative's Mushroom Material to protect the DART-ETD system during deployment when the buoy is dropped off the deck of a ship into the ocean. Testing conducted by NOAA has shown that Mushroom Materials can withstand prolonged exposure to tropical shipping conditions, short term direct exposure to rain and sea spray (as experienced on the back deck of a ship), and then break down in both fresh and salt water in a period of less than 5 months, so as not to contribute to the ocean's plastic gyres. Given NOAA's needs, molded Mushroom Material parts provide the perfect solution in a low-cost, bio-based alternative to traditional petrochemical foams.

  • Awards

After a year working with Steelcase's test labs, third party facilities, and an expert in cotton gin mill plant byproducts, Ecovative developed a blend of Mushroom Packaging that could replace EPP (expanded polypropylene) packaging in vibration and drop testing. When Steelcase conducted additional testing for extreme temperatures and moisture exposure, Ecovative exceeded the required standards. Based on these impressive test results, Steelcase began replacing molded and fabricated EPP parts with Mushroom® Packaging for ready-to-assemble office furniture. This groundbreaking solution was honored with the highest accolades in the packaging industry: The Dupont Diamond Award and the Greener Package Innovator of the Year Award.
